I read this book almost three years ago and it’s still with me. I keep returning to it; it’s hard not to, such is the consummate beauty of its language, its world. Nao must be some kind of magician, because what’s she’s created here is an immaculate world, with its own impossible rules (as befits a fairy-tale riff), where humans turn into birds and pull pranks on their mothers, where God acts like a bored child playing spin the bottle, where we inhabit a zone where YouTube, Alexander McQueen, and God all hangout together. This last is a real marvel of this book – the expansiveness of its journey, the lush ground it covers, the spaces it opens inside us vast enough to contain fashion designers, fairytale queens, contemporary culture, and the vicissitudes of love simultaneously. That’s the heart of this story: a love story between two princesses, Cynthia and Veronica. Ouch. What love. The tenderness between the two women puts a lump in the throat. It’s a cure for wounded hearts. Read this book because it’s structurally ingenious, because it’s philosophically rich, because it’s playful, because it’s a fresh take on an old fairytale, because it’s subtly subversive in ways most fiction fails to be, because it’s completely new yet touches us in deeply familiar ways; read it because it’s perfect, because it might change your life. And years from now, you’ll still be thumbing its pages, looking for something.Product details

Swans In Halfmourning Vi Khi Nao 9780692425152 Books Reviews
This is my favorite of Ms. Nao stories. I not only enjoyed the story; I particularly like the way she uses language and the way she expresses the love between the two women.
This is just wonderful story telling.
Swans In Half-mourning take as its starting point The Six Swans by Hans Christian Anderson. She balances dexterously between poetry and storytelling, making this poetical story come alive in the telling.
Swans in Half-Mourning is creative and smart. The author’s intelligence shines through which made me desire a new and improved brain. I was left wanting, wishing I could competently do something such as this. The original fables had to be googled and researched for the proper read along. Overall I was left strung out and satisfied by the work.
I am not surprised that this came from Vi Khi Nao—that is a very good thing. There is language like dervishes mirrored in black, broken crystal. Typical of Nao's writing, there is language in movement at persistent right angles waltzes toward, around, but-just-away-from expectation... all at once the prose tumbles close enough you can feel it breathe and a horizon opens on the part of your hair.
SIHM is a myth and a marriage. SIHM is a lesbian love story. The fairytale in the book maps to the language; characters inhabit a mystical modern kingdom of glowing transformations and playful, regal birds. The narration is experienced centrally and non-linearly—like from inside of a revolving hologram. And, although the fictional time is splintered and open, flow is ordered and balanced according to a powerful formal intuition. Nao is mathematical, whimsical, careful. The author's calculated weaving is a sui generis, unpeeling fable of a magical family, a note stitched to the hem of a curtain, and an atmosphere that is bloody and lovely.
Vi Khi Nao's fantastic universe is eerie, drawing on a lifeforce stronger and darker than the punctuation by light-hearted episodes would alone suggest, and themes of wisdom and desire and patience shyly sway under faint psychic scents of truffle and green tea...

Swans in Half-Mourning is a great novella--a telling of an old tale, yes, but one that rewards the reader's attention. Perhaps it is best read with a needle and thread in hand in order to sew a thread through words like ‘eyelash’ and ‘marshmallow’ and ‘cork’ and ‘voice’, so that after the book is finished, the reader may then follow the sewn trail back to the beginning. That is to say, it’s a book best read ten times, with new eyes and new skin each time. Then you might find the eucalyptus that is long burning. Otherwise, to only read it once, is to read a swan. To read it twice is to find a person. To read it three times, is to find a swan again, but this time wearing a shirt stained with tears.
